Every year in July, in San Diego, takes place a conference of Comic-Con. Officially, this is an international exhibition of comics. In fact, it is one of the main booms in the geek universe. It determines the future of the entertainment industry for a next few years. Now there are held conferences devoted to the most popular movies, TV shows and, of course, comic books.
What Is Comicon?
Comic-Con is an annual international festival held in San Diego for nearly last 35 years. The festival was founded by Sheldon Dorf and was originally conceived as a comic exhibition. Over time, it expanded to include the other elements of popular culture such as anime, manga, horror literature, collectible card games, video games, fantasy and science fiction films and literature.
In addition, in comicon are shown the trailers of future science fiction films. Comic-Con attracts thousands of geeks fanatics who dress up like their favorite heroes from movies, TV series and comic books. That is a show.
According to reports, each time more than 4 thousand visitors of the festival dress up. But in fact 20 presents of people emphasize their preferences, so that is an approximate number of cosplayers. The real number is difficult to determine.
This annual event is visited by over a hundred thousand fans of comic books, including many stars. In the last year the conference was attended by Robert Rodriguez, Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, Brandon Cooper, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.
Today, to get more or less complete picture of what is happening at the festival, you have to carefully consider its program, plan your route and choose stands that you want to visit. Otherwise you risk getting lost in this motley masquerade.
History of Comi-Con
The first Comic-Con in San Diego was in 1970, lasted three days and brought together about 300 visitors. Three years later, in 1973, first appeared a mandatory element of masquerade, when visitors dressed in their favorite characters.
The first 20 years of Comic-Con was held in rented halls of various hotels, but in 1991 it moved to the place where it is still based, in the conference center of San Diego.
Since 2000, after the X-Men collected the big cash, Comic-Con began to be important for Hollywood. It was a turning point. Since the cinematic and television presentations at the conference are becoming more and more attractive, “Comic-Con” is not only for the fans of the comic book, but simply for lovers of movies and TV series.
Until 2006 you could buy tickets for “Comic-Con” even on the day of the conference, but then everything changed. When the event has gained cult status, tickets began to diverge long before the opening, often immediately after the start of sales. All this hype is clearly demonstrated in the series “The Big Bang Theory.”
In the words of an American actor, comedian, writer, producer, director, and a just a man Bob Kevin Smith, San Diego is not another planet, it is a whole different consciousness. According to Kevin, before visiting the festival he was shrimp, and only dreamed about of becoming a man. And after it he discovered his divinity and became the god of light. The seriousness of Kevin Smith, cannot be guaranteed, but his words quite accurately describe the atmosphere reigning at Comic-Con.
